The Royal Florist

Tuesday 5th March, 2013

He's the man responsible for the trees in Westminster Abbey at the royal wedding, and he provided the blooms for the Prince of Wales and the then Mrs Parker Bowles's nuptials. So how does one become a royal florist? For Shane Connolly, it was quite straightforward: "I'd been working for a charity at St James's Palace, one of the staff there noticed me and, well, it just flowed from there."
For those of us living in less palatial surroundings. Connolly advises: "Keep it simple. Try not to do anything too ambitious. I like to use growing things at home, all the lovely bulbs around at the moment. Big wooden bowls filled with primroses and moss look very beautiful." Most of all Connolly urges you to buy British. "We have so many beautiful spring flowers -narcissi from the Isles of Scilly, tulips from Spalding, in Lincolnshire, and widow irises from Cornwall.
